There’s something about painting cabinets that feels a little intimidating. I thought about this project for a good year (yes, a year) before finally starting—I was so overwhelmed by the idea of messing them up. But I promise, it’s one of those projects that’s so worth it.
Painting my cabinets in Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige was one of those game-changing moves. What once felt cold and sterile is now the coziest space—I genuinely love spending time in there.
I’ve painted a lot in this house, and this method gave me that smooth, almost factory-like finish—without a sprayer and without overcomplicating things.
Here’s exactly what I did:
- First, I cleaned everything really well. This step matters more than people think. I used a degreaser with warm water because paint simply will not stick to grease. It’s not glamorous, but it’s the foundation for everything that comes after.
- Next, I did a light sand. Nothing aggressive—just a quick pass with a 220 grit sanding block to scuff the surface and give the paint something to hold onto. You’re not stripping anything down, just creating a little texture.
- Then came the paint. I used Sherwin-Williams Emerald cabinet paint, and this is where patience really comes in. I applied two thin, even coats using a good roller and brush—no spraying. That’s the part people are always surprised by. You don’t need fancy equipment, just the right tools and a steady hand. Thin coats are what give you that smooth, finished look.
- And finally, I let them cure. They’ll feel dry pretty quickly, but full curing takes time. I treated them gently for the first couple of weeks, and it made all the difference in how they held up.
It’s one of those projects that can completely change how your kitchen feels—without a full renovation. Just paint, a little patience, and a willingness to start before it feels perfect.
If you try this, I’d love to hear how it goes 🤍
